The conference ‘Thinking the Anthropocene’ that took place in Paris on the 14th and 15th of November 2013 was ‘designed to begin the rethinking of the social sciences and humanities demanded by the arrival of the new geological epoch, the “Age of Humans”’. It was based on the idea that the rise of the Anthropocene as a concept is shifting the Enlightenment foundations of the social sciences and humanities, namely its conception of the natural world. Inherent in such a shift, so the organisers, is a rethinking of such central tenets

Future Earth is a new 10-year international research initiative that will develop the knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades. Future Earth will mobilise thousands of scientists while strengthening partnerships with policy-makers and other stakeholders to provide sustainability options and solutions.
The summit taking place on the 27th and 28th of January 2014 in Berlin made for the launch event of the German branch of this global research initiative. Its aim was to provide
